In short: Traditional philosophy views the world as a collection of static objects. Process philosophy flips this, arguing that reality is fundamentally composed of change, becoming, and shifting relationships. Instead of enduring substances, the world is a fluid, dynamic process, a perspective that bridges the gap between science and human experience.

For centuries, Western thought was dominated by the idea of 'being'—the belief that reality consists of permanent, unchanging substances. In this classical view, change is merely an accidental occurrence that glides over a stable core. Process philosophy challenges this, asserting that 'becoming' is the primary reality. From the ancient insights of Heraclitus, who famously noted that one cannot step into the same river twice, to modern thinkers, this school of thought suggests that the fundamental stuff of the world is not material, but volatile flux.

Alfred North Whitehead, a pivotal figure in this shift, began his career as a mathematician, famously collaborating with Bertrand Russell on the monumental Principia Mathematica. However, after moving to Harvard University in 1924, Whitehead turned his attention to metaphysics. He argued that natural science was hampered by an outdated reliance on timeless material substances. To Whitehead, material is more accurately understood as a process, and he sought a comprehensive cosmology that could unify scientific, aesthetic, ethical, and religious experiences.

Whitehead’s 1929 work, Process and Reality, remains the definitive text of this movement. By moving away from the rigid, static ontology of his predecessors, he proposed a complex, fluid framework that accommodates the novelty and change inherent in our experience. This approach does not just describe the natural world; it provides a conceptual bridge, allowing for a more holistic understanding of existence that moves beyond the limitations of purely analytical or continental methods.
