Witnessing the most violent collision in the periodic table
In short: Watch the historic first video of the reaction between the periodic table's most reactive metal and its most reactive non-metal. This extraordinary experiment was conducted under strict safety protocols to capture a rare chemical encounter.
To prepare for the 2012 Christmas Lectures, Dr Peter Wothers visited the University of Leicester to film this unique occurrence. The experiment involves reacting caesium, the most reactive metal, with fluorine, the most reactive non-metal. Because of the extreme reactivity involved, Professor Eric Hope was required to oversee the process to ensure the experiment could be conducted safely.
