In short: We believe we see the world as it truly is, but we are actually navigating a private interpretation. This theory suggests our minds use subconscious filters—shaped by biology, culture, and experience—to create a personalized version of reality, often mistaking our internal map for the actual world.

Coined by Timothy Leary and expanded by Robert Anton Wilson, the concept of the 'reality tunnel' posits that no two people inhabit the same world. Instead, we each navigate a subjective space shaped by a set of mental filters. These filters are formed from a complex cocktail of biological predispositions, language, education, and life experiences. When we fail to recognize that our perceptions are merely interpretations, we fall into what philosophers call 'naïve realism.'

This phenomenon is closely linked to confirmation bias, the tendency to prioritize information that reinforces our existing beliefs while filtering out contradictions. This can make reality tunnels transparent to those inside them, leading to rigid dogmas, prejudices, and even ideologies that justify violence. In some psychological frameworks, such as Charles Tart’s work on 'consensus trance,' even our normal waking consciousness is viewed as a form of hypnotic induction into a shared societal trance.

However, the theory does not deny the existence of an objective truth; rather, it suggests our access to it is always mediated. The goal of 'constructivist thinking' is to use metacognition to become aware of these filters. By practicing techniques like meditation, hypnosis, or even the skeptical suspension of judgment found in Pyrrhonism, it may be possible to 'deprogram' old tunnels and widen our perspective. For Wilson, a fully functioning human is one who maintains a flexible enough tunnel to empathize with the different 'game rules' and realities of others.
