In short: For centuries, Dutch life was defined by rigid religious pillars. Today, that structure has collapsed. With over half the population identifying as non-religious and church attendance plummeting, the country has transformed into a society where faith is a private, often optional, and increasingly rare aspect of modern existence.

The Dutch religious landscape has undergone a radical shift. Between the 10th and 20th centuries, Christianity was the dominant force, with Calvinism and Catholicism serving as the primary pillars of society. By the late 1800s, roughly 60% of the population identified as Calvinist, while 35% were Catholic. However, the post-World War II era triggered a rapid decline in institutional religion. By 2017, non-religious individuals became the majority for the first time, and recent data indicates that over 80% of the population rarely or never sets foot in a church.

This secularization is not merely a loss of numbers but a fundamental change in belief. Even among those who maintain a formal religious affiliation, many identify as atheists, agnostics, or 'ietsists'—people who believe in a vague higher power without subscribing to organized dogma. Concepts like hell and damnation have largely faded from public discourse. In the Protestant Church of the Netherlands, which formed in 2004 as a merger of several historic denominations, research suggests that a significant portion of both members and clergy hold non-theistic views.

Despite this secular trend, religion remains a quiet, personal influence. The Dutch Constitution guarantees state funding for religious schools, and Christian-based political parties continue to hold seats in the States General. While immigration has introduced new minority faiths like Islam and Hinduism, the overall trend remains one of profound detachment from traditional institutions. For many, religious labels have shifted from markers of spiritual conviction to mere cultural identifiers, reflecting a society that views faith as a private matter that should remain outside the public sphere.
