Why understanding religion is about more than just knowing religious facts
In short: True religious literacy is not simply knowing the tenets of a specific faith. It is a critical tool for analyzing how belief systems intersect with politics, culture, and social power. In a diverse world, this skill can help dismantle deep-seated prejudices and foster genuine mutual understanding.
Religious literacy is often misunderstood as mere familiarity with a particular tradition, such as the specific knowledge a Sikh or Muslim might have about their own faith. However, a more academic definition—inspired by the American Academy of Religion’s guidelines—describes it as the capacity to analyze how religion overlaps with social, political, and cultural life. While everyone possesses some level of religious literacy, the ability to use it as a tool for critical reflection often depends on having access to safe spaces for debate and discussion.
The lack of this literacy can have real-world consequences. Research suggests that widespread religious illiteracy can fuel antagonism and prejudice. To combat this, educators can use a non-devotional, academic perspective to diminish these tensions. This approach does not aim to favor one tradition over another, though scholars note that the concept of literacy itself is not entirely neutral, as it is linked to the complexities of modernity and colonial history.
In the context of further education, developing these skills is a matter of social justice. A research project funded by the St Peter’s Saltley Trust, titled ‘Religious Literacy for FE: A Social Justice Approach’, worked to create resources for educators who often lack specific training. By using workshops and co-design principles, the project aimed to help colleges cultivate respect and tolerance, helping students and staff navigate the intersections of religious and non-religious identities in a modern society.
