Control and value appraisals drive a wide range of human emotions
In short: A review of control-value theory explains how human emotions are shaped by how much control we feel we have over situations and how much we value them. Originally focused on achievement-related feelings, the theory has expanded to account for social, existential, and epistemic emotions.
The theory suggests that our emotions are influenced by personal traits, social settings, and cultural contexts. It also explores how emotions impact learning, health, and performance, as well as how people regulate their feelings.
Because this is a theoretical review, the findings are based on an overview of existing evidence rather than a single new experiment.
Why it matters: Understanding how we perceive control and value can help explain a vast array of human emotional experiences.
