Why mathematicians use imaginary numbers to solve real-world oscillations

Response to Complex Exponential · 12:51 · Video: MIT OpenCourseWare · Watch at the source

In short: Understanding how systems respond to waves often requires stepping into the complex plane. This video explains why treating a cosine input as a complex exponential simplifies solving linear equations.

In the study of differential equations, finding the response to a cosine input can be mathematically cumbersome. Professors Gilbert Strang and Cleve Moler demonstrate that for linear equations, the solution is more elegantly handled by using a complex exponential input instead.

By shifting to complex numbers, the magnitude of the resulting complex solution represents the gain (G). The real part of this complex result provides the actual solution for the original cosine input. This technique simplifies the analysis of oscillatory systems by leveraging the properties of complex arithmetic.
