In short: Long before he became the most influential film critic of his generation, Roger Ebert spent his formative years covering high school athletics. This video explores his early career path in local journalism.

Ebert began his professional life in the public sector at just 15 years old. He worked as a reporter for Champaign-Urbana’s News-Gazette, a position he maintained throughout his college years. During this time, he balanced his local reporting with roles as a reporter and editor for the University of Illinois's Daily Illini.

His transition into cinema began while he was still a student. In 1961, he published one of his first formal movie reviews in the Daily Illini, focusing on the film La Dolce Vita.
