How to measure the invisible gap in an infinite sum
In short: When a series converges but its exact sum is impossible to calculate directly, mathematicians use a clever trick: they use improper integrals to bound the remaining error.
This video explores a technique for estimating the sum of a convergent series. While partial sums give us a starting point, they don't inherently reveal how much of the total sum is still missing. By applying improper integrals, we can determine the maximum possible distance between a partial sum and the true infinite sum.
This method is a core component of AP Calculus BC, providing a rigorous way to quantify precision in infinite processes.
