The Beothuk woman who drew the only first-hand account of her vanishing world
In short: Shanawdithit, often remembered only as the last of her people, was a talented artist and witness to the destruction of the Beothuk culture. This lecture explores her life beyond the myth of extinction, examining the colonial forces that shaped her existence in nineteenth-century Newfoundland.
In 1828, Shanawdithit was brought to St. John’s by William Eppes Cormack, a merchant and amateur naturalist who feared the Beothuk were on the brink of cultural erasure. While living at Roope’s Plantation during the winter of 1828 and 1829, she used pencil and paper to create maps, stories, and sketches that remain the only direct historical records from a Beothuk individual. These works documented her people's resilience, their connections to Indigenous neighbors like the Mi’kmaw and Innu, and their experiences with colonial violence.
Historian Julia Laite challenges the traditional narrative that the Beothuk simply 'dwindled' into extinction. By examining the hyper-extraction of Newfoundland’s resources and the exploitation of its settlers, the lecture reframes Shanawdithit’s story from one of inevitable disappearance to one of active resistance. Her death in 1829, shortly after completing her drawings, led to her being labeled the 'last of the Red Indians'—a term that obscured her vibrant life and the specific, violent dispossession of her people.
