Can a populist Democrat reclaim the working class by returning to the Senate floor?
In short: Sherrod Brown, a fixture of Ohio politics for decades, has spent his career championing a populist agenda focused on the dignity of work. After losing his Senate seat in 2024, he is now mounting a comeback in the 2026 special election, testing whether his brand of progressivism still resonates with voters.
Sherrod Brown’s political career began in 1974 when he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, becoming the youngest person to serve in that body at the time. Over the following decades, he transitioned from state-level roles, including Ohio Secretary of State, to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1993. His tenure in the House was marked by a staunch opposition to free trade agreements, most notably his leadership in the 2005 effort to block the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which passed by only one vote.
Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, Brown established himself as a progressive voice on financial and labor issues. Throughout his time in the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs and advocated for policies like paid sick leave during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being a close ally of Bernie Sanders, he remained a pragmatic player within the Democratic Party, even being vetted as a potential vice-presidential running mate for Hillary Clinton in 2016. His political calculus was often influenced by the practicalities of governance, such as the concern that his departure from the Senate would allow a Republican governor to appoint his successor.
Following his 2024 defeat to Bernie Moreno, Brown briefly returned to civilian life, launching the Dignity of Work Institute and serving as a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. However, his exit from public office was short-lived. In August 2025, he announced his candidacy for the 2026 special election to fill the seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance. As he prepares to challenge incumbent Jon Husted, Brown continues to argue that the Democratic Party must refocus on the needs of working-class Americans to remain relevant in a shifting political landscape.
