The Primordial Serpent Who Holds the Entire Universe Upon His Thousand Hoods
In short: In Hindu cosmology, Shesha is the infinite serpent who supports the Earth and serves as the eternal bed for Vishnu. Known as the remainder who endures even when the universe dissolves, this divine naga bridges the gap between cosmic stability, earthly incarnations, and the deepest mysteries of creation.
Shesha, also called Ananta or Adishesha, is a central figure in Hindu tradition, representing the primordial force that persists through every cosmic cycle. His name, derived from the Sanskrit root 'śiṣ', translates to 'he who remains,' signifying his role as the constant foundation of existence. While the universe undergoes dissolution at the end of each kalpa, Shesha endures, floating upon the cosmic ocean as the resting place for Vishnu in his various forms, such as Narayana.
The iconography of Shesha is as vast as his mythological significance. He is typically depicted with multiple hoods—sometimes numbering one thousand—adorned with jewels that illuminate the quarters of the universe. According to the Mahabharata, Shesha was the eldest of one thousand serpents born to the sage Kashyapa and Kadru. Distressed by the cruelty of his kin, he performed severe penance, eventually receiving a boon from Brahma to stabilize the Earth. He descended into the subterranean realm of Patala, where he continues to support the world upon his hood.
Beyond his role as a cosmic pillar, Shesha is deeply integrated into the narratives of Vishnu’s incarnations. Traditions identify him as the source of several figures who appeared on Earth to uphold dharma, including Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, and Balarama, the brother of Krishna. In later philosophical traditions, he is associated with the grammarian Patanjali and the philosopher Ramanuja. His influence even extends into modern cultural practices, such as the design of traditional snake boats in Kerala and the veneration of naga guardian deities in Thai folk religion.
