The hidden engineering required to manage our modern waste
In short: Most people view landfills as simple pits, but modern waste management requires complex engineering to prevent environmental catastrophe. This video explains how we handle solid waste while mitigating its impact on our water and air.
Solid waste—any discarded material that isn't a liquid or gas—originates from domestic, industrial, business, and agricultural sectors. While landfills are the primary disposal method, they pose significant risks, including groundwater contamination and the release of harmful gases.
To combat these risks, sanitary municipal landfills utilize specific engineering components: plastic or clay bottom liners, stormwater and leachate collection systems, and methane collection systems. Alternatively, incineration can drastically reduce waste volume but introduces the challenge of air pollution.
