How environmental shifts drive the rise and fall of species

Species and the environment | Mechanisms of evolution | High school biology | Khan Academy · 4:23 · Video: Khan Academy · Watch at the source

In short: This video explores how changes in the physical world shape life on Earth. You will learn how environmental shifts can expand existing populations, trigger the emergence of entirely new species, or lead to sudden extinction.

Evolutionary change is often driven by shifts in the physical environment, whether these changes occur through natural processes or human activity. When populations are subjected to different environmental conditions, they may begin to diverge, eventually resulting in the formation of new, distinct species.

Conversely, these same environmental pressures can lead to the decline of certain populations and, in extreme cases, the total extinction of a species.
