How one digital platform democratized elite education for millions worldwide

Spring 2019 Update from the Dean · 5:13 · Video: MIT OpenCourseWare · Watch at the source

In short: MIT OpenCourseWare has transformed from a niche experiment into a global educational powerhouse. With over 2,450 courses available, it provides learners everywhere with the same high-level materials used by students on campus, bridging the gap between elite institutions and the rest of the world.

As MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) celebrates its 18th birthday, the platform has grown into a thriving resource with an immense global footprint. Currently, the site hosts more than 2,450 courses, offering a breadth and depth of higher education content that is unmatched by other open educational resources. This scale has allowed the platform to reach over 300 million learners across the globe, providing them with access to the same course notes, problem sets, projects, and syllabi used by MIT students and faculty.

The impact of OCW is amplified by what Dean Krishna Rajagopal calls its 'multipliers'—educators around the world who integrate these materials into their own teaching. By taking insights from MIT faculty and adding their own local perspective and experience, these instructors help shape the education of students globally. This ecosystem of shared knowledge extends beyond the website to digital platforms like YouTube, where OCW has become the number one .edu channel, nearing 2 million subscribers.

Despite this success, the platform stands at a critical crossroads. To meet evolving technological demands and the pedagogical innovations of MIT's faculty, OCW is focused on renewing its platform. Future goals include enhancing content discoverability, improving the user experience, and ensuring the website is fully mobile responsive. By keeping the curriculum a vibrant and current reflection of MIT's cutting-edge teaching, OCW aims to increase its accessibility and positive impact for learners in the decades to come.
