Stephen Graham's dyslexia means his wife reads his scripts first
The Kirkby-born actor behind This Is England's Combo and Netflix's Adolescence cannot easily read the scripts he is offered, so his wife, actor Hannah Walters, reads them and helps him choose. Together they run Matriarch Productions, and Adolescence swept three Emmys for him as actor, writer and executive producer.
Graham was born on 3 August 1973 in Kirkby, near Liverpool. His mother was a white English social worker; his biological father had a Swedish mother and a Jamaican father. He was raised by his mother and a stepfather, a mechanic who later retrained as a children's nurse and who, having African heritage himself, helped the light-skinned boy embrace that side of his identity. A neighbour, actor Andrew Schofield, saw eight-year-old Stephen play Jim Hawkins in a school Treasure Island and urged him to act.
As a teenager he joined Liverpool's Everyman Theatre youth scene and danced with a breakdancing crew. Training at Rose Bruford College in London, he met Walters; they were friends for five years before becoming a couple and married in 2008. He has spoken openly about depression, including a breakdown after leaving home that he links to unprocessed grief from his teens.
Early screen work included Snatch, Band of Brothers and Gangs of New York, but his breakthrough came as the menacing Combo in Shane Meadows's This Is England in 2006, a role he carried into three television sequels. He became known for accents from across Britain, Ireland and America, playing Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire and a union boss opposite Pacino and De Niro in The Irishman, though critics panned his Welsh accent in White House Farm. In Boiling Point he played a disintegrating chef in a film shot in one continuous take.
Adolescence, which he created and co-wrote in 2025, follows a father whose 13-year-old son is accused of killing a girl. It sparked national debate about online misogyny and safety, its co-writer Jack Thorne discussed it at Downing Street, and it was made free for schools. Graham was appointed OBE in 2023 for services to drama and dedicated it to his mother, who died in 2022.
