Can middle schoolers solve the mystery of the Neanderthal extinction?
In short: This video explores how students use 3-D digital animation to reconstruct the world of Homo neanderthalensis, using fossil and genetic evidence to investigate why this species vanished.
Through the American Museum of Natural History's Virtual Worlds Institute, students participate in a two-week program to build photo-realistic digital environments of ice-age Europe. By analyzing cultural, fossil, and genetic data from museum collections, participants develop their own hypotheses regarding the extinction of Neanderthals nearly 30,000 years ago.
The program, which took place from July 8-19, 2013, allows 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students to present their reconstructed virtual worlds to scientists and family.
