Tracking avian diversity across the remote islands of Vanuatu
In short: In November 2014, a research team from the American Museum of Natural History traveled to Vanuatu to document the island nation's bird species. This expedition provides a rare look at the field methods used to study tropical biodiversity in isolated environments.
Led by assistant curator Brian Smith, the Constantine S. Niarchos Expedition focused on surveying the unique bird populations inhabiting Vanuatu. Smith was accompanied by fellow researchers Michael Andersen and William Mauck III to conduct this ornithological study.
The project was made possible through the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, highlighting the importance of dedicated funding for field-based biological research in remote Pacific locations.
