In short: Born in 1781, Sahajanand Swami transformed from a wandering child yogi into the charismatic leader of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. By institutionalizing his charisma through temple construction, scriptural creation, and a hereditary leadership structure, he built a resilient religious tradition that grew from thousands of followers to millions worldwide today.

The Swaminarayan Sampradaya originated in Gujarat, rooted in the Vishishtadvaita philosophy of Ramanuja. Sahajanand Swami, later known as Swaminarayan, assumed leadership of the Uddhav Sampraday in 1801 following the death of his predecessor, Ramanand Swami. Despite facing significant opposition from religious and secular powers, he rapidly expanded his influence. By the 1820s, British sources estimated at least 100,000 followers, a number that swelled to nearly 290,000 by 1872 and reached an estimated 5 million by 2001.

To ensure the movement's longevity, Swaminarayan institutionalized his authority. In 1826, he formalized two dioceses, the Vadtal Gadi and Ahmedabad Gadi, appointing his nephews as acharyas to maintain a hereditary line of succession. He also commissioned six major mandirs between 1822 and 1828 to serve as centers for devotional worship. These temples housed murtis of Krishna, which followers regarded as representations of Swaminarayan himself. His soteriology focused on the goal of becoming Brahmarūpa, where the soul is liberated from the cycle of births and deaths to enjoy eternal bliss through continuous devotion.

The movement's theology is defined by the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan, which distinguishes between Parabrahman and Aksharbrahman as two eternal realities. This interpretation remains a point of divergence among various denominations. In the 20th century, disputes over authentic successorship led to several split-offs, the most prominent being the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) in 1907. While these groups differ in their specific leadership and theological nuances, they remain united in their veneration of Swaminarayan as a divine manifestation. Today, these diverse branches continue to engage in global humanitarian service, reflecting the founder's early emphasis on social outreach and community support.
