Why this Byzantine monk claimed direct personal experience of God was essential for everyone
In short: Symeon the New Theologian was a radical mystic who argued that divine illumination was not reserved for the elite, but accessible to all. By prioritizing personal spiritual encounters over formal dogma, he challenged the ecclesiastical establishment of his time and paved the way for the later Hesychast movement in contemplative prayer.
Born around 949 in Paphlagonia, Symeon rose to prominence as the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mamas near Constantinople. His title, the New Theologian, was bestowed to distinguish him from the esteemed St. John the Evangelist and St. Gregory of Nazianzus. Unlike the academic sense of theology, this title recognized his role as one who spoke from the direct, personal experience of God, a state often referred to as theoria.
Symeon’s teachings centered on the conviction that through rigorous mental prayer, one could achieve a contemplative vision of divine light. This illumination was not merely a theoretical concept but a tangible encounter with the Divine Unknown. He insisted that this experience was essential for interpreting sacred Scriptures and remained attainable for any individual who earnestly committed to a life of prayer and asceticism. His writings, which include the Hymns of the Divine Loves and various catecheses, represent a distinct phase in the evolution of Greek spirituality.
His uncompromising monastic policies and intense devotion to his spiritual tutor, Symeon the Studite, eventually brought him into conflict with the Patriarch of Constantinople. This friction led to his forced resignation in 1009 and subsequent exile to Chrysopolis, where he died in 1022. Despite this institutional pushback, his influence persisted, as he became the first Eastern Christian mystic to openly share his personal spiritual journey, leaving a legacy that would deeply shape the contemplative traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
