How a Texas sharecropper became one of the most decorated soldiers in history
In short: Born into extreme poverty with eleven siblings, Audie Murphy had to hunt small animals just to keep his family fed. After falsifying his age to enlist, he transitioned from a desperate teenager in Texas to a legendary World War II hero and eventually a Hollywood star.
Audie Murphy's path to heroism was forged in hardship. Born on June 20, 1925, near Kingston, Texas, he grew up in a dilapidated sharecropper's house. His family struggled to feed twelve children, a situation exacerbated when his father, Emit, abandoned the family in 1940. Following his mother's death a year later, Murphy turned to hunting rabbits and small animals to help provide for his siblings.
Driven to honor his mother, Murphy enlisted in the military just ten days after his 17th birthday, having falsified his birth certificate to meet eligibility requirements. During World War II, he became one of the most decorated U.S. soldiers, earning 33 awards and medals, including the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1945. His combat record was intense; he was wounded three times and killed 240 German soldiers. He famously leaped atop a flaming tank destroyer, redirecting its machine gun against opposing forces.
The trauma of war left a lasting mark, as Murphy suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder throughout his life. However, his status as a war hero opened doors in Hollywood. After appearing on the cover of LIFE magazine on July 16, 1945, he was invited to acting by James Cagney. Murphy went on to star in more than 40 films, including 'The Red Badge of Courage' (1951) and 'To Hell and Back' (1955). He died in May 1971 following a private plane crash and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
