Tracing the human story across the Americas through millennia of migration and change
In short: This animated map visualizes the long history of human movement throughout the Americas. It tracks the development of diverse cultures from the initial arrival of people from Asia to the complex shifts in borders caused by colonial history and political upheaval.
The project maps the expansion of human populations across North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. It illustrates how borders have been defined by imagination, imposition, and conflict over thousands of years. The visual narrative begins with the earliest human presence on the continent, dating back more than 20,000 years.
Developed by the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at The Met, the map integrates research from various scholars and institutions, including data on linguistic groups and the history of the transatlantic slave trade. It serves as a dynamic record of how civilizations have flourished and transformed across the region.
