A rare look at the meticulous field work of Bernd and Hilla Becher
In short: This silent footage captures the legendary artist couple during a 1987 road trip across the American heartland. Filmed by their son, Max, it provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes perspective on the practical realities of their industrial photography practice.
The film documents the Bechers' daily routine while traveling in their signature VW bus. It highlights the physical labor involved in their process, from hauling heavy equipment into motel rooms to the precise, deliberate positioning of their camera to capture grain elevators.
Beyond simple observation, the footage reveals the artists actively manipulating their surroundings to achieve their desired composition. Edited by Max Becher in 2022 for a major exhibition, this record demystifies the quiet, methodical work that defined their career.
