Humanity's first message to the stars was a small aluminium plate on Pioneer 10.
In short: In 1972, a space probe launched toward Jupiter carrying more than just scientific instruments. It bore a mysterious message intended for extraterrestrial life, marking our first attempt to communicate beyond Earth. Discover the story behind this cosmic postcard and the symbols etched into its surface.
On March 10, 1972, the Pioneer 10 probe departed from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard an Atlas-Centaur rocket. While its primary mission involved studying Jupiter and its moons, the craft carried a unique artifact: a 9x6-inch aluminium plate known as the Pioneer Plaque.
Bolted to the probe's high-gain antenna, the plaque featured diagrams of the solar system, mysterious symbols, and depictions of a man and woman. This object served as a deliberate attempt to send a message from humanity into the depths of space, representing our first effort to reach out to potential extraterrestrial beings.
