In short: Discover how artist OlaRonke Akinmowo used The Met's residency to revive the spirit of 'The Sisterhood,' a legendary 1970s writing circle, by founding a new collective for Black women writers.

Inspired by a photograph of the 1970s group featuring icons like Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, Akinmowo established Obsidian. This collective met several times a month for over a year to workshop prose and explore New York City, including visits to The Met.

The project culminated in the publication of 'Pretty Little Brick,' a book showcasing the members' work. Through the Civic Practice Partnership, the initiative highlights how communal writing can serve as a tool for reflection and emotional release.
