Beyond Earth, the solar system is a vast, diverse collection of strange, watery worlds.

In short: Our solar system is far more than just eight planets orbiting a star. From the hydrocarbon seas of Titan to the ice-covered oceans hidden beneath the surfaces of moons orbiting Jupiter and Saturn, we are discovering that the conditions for life might be far more common than we once imagined.

The solar system is a complex neighborhood containing one star, eight planets, and five dwarf planets. Beyond these primary bodies, the system is populated by at least 290 moons, over 1.3 million asteroids, and approximately 3,900 comets. All of these objects reside within the Milky Way, a barred spiral galaxy defined by two major and two minor arms. Our Sun sits within the Orion Arm, a small, partial arm located between the Sagittarius and Perseus arms.

Our position within the galaxy is dynamic; the solar system orbits the galactic center at a speed of about 515,000 mph, or 828,000 kph. Completing a single orbit is a monumental task that requires roughly 230 million years. While we travel through this galactic space, our local exploration has revealed a startling diversity of environments. We have observed the frozen, ancient deserts of Mars, which once held flowing water, and the extreme, hellish conditions found on the surface of Venus.

Perhaps the most profound discovery is the potential for life on moons orbiting gas giants. Jupiter and Saturn possess moons with ice-covered oceans that may represent the most common habitat for life in the universe. Current missions are actively investigating these mysteries. The Europa Clipper, launched in October 2024, is currently conducting a detailed study of Europa, while the Psyche mission is scheduled to arrive at a metal-rich asteroid in August 2029. These efforts, alongside the Lucy mission to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids and the NEO Surveyor project, continue to reshape our understanding of our cosmic home.
