The nuclear physicist who declared a one-man invasion of an island
In short: In 1990, a French physicist attempted to seize a feudal island by force. This video explores the bizarre logistics of a solo invasion and the man who believed he was the rightful ruler.
Andre Gardes, an unemployed nuclear physicist, claimed he was the rightful 'Seigneur' of Sark, a small state with 610 inhabitants. In August 1990, he attempted to stage a forceful takeover of the territory.
Despite his ambitions, Gardes was unable to recruit any followers, leading him to proceed as a one-man force. He followed a self-imposed sense of civility by arriving the night before his planned takeover and posting public notices of his intent the following day at noon.
