How a commoner rose from the rice paddies to found an empire
In short: History is often viewed as an unstoppable tide, yet certain individuals seem to break its course. From the Byzantine throne to the Han dynasty, we examine the extraordinary trajectories of peasant-born leaders who defied the odds through sheer will, luck, and calculated ambition.
In the study of history, a tension exists between the 'tides of history' and the power of the individual. The French historian Fernand Braudel suggested that people are merely 'surface disturbances' carried by larger forces. However, the life of Liu Bang, who became Emperor Gaozu of Han, challenges this fatalism. Born a peasant in a small village in what is now Jiangsu province, Liu Bang rose from obscurity to be crowned emperor on February 28, 202 BCE, founding a dynasty that shaped Chinese culture for centuries.
Liu Bang’s ascent was a stark contrast to his rival, Xiang Yu, who descended from a lineage of patrician military leaders. While Liu Bang’s early life remains largely a mystery, his rise was accompanied by intense myth-making. To legitimize his rule, legends were spread claiming he possessed a 'dragon-like' face and auspicious moles on his left thigh. Even his pregnancy was shrouded in myth, with tales of a glowing dragon appearing during a rainstorm to signal his greatness.
The impact of such a transition is profound. Today, one fifth of the world's population identifies as Han Chinese, a direct legacy of the dynasty Liu Bang established. His story mirrors that of Basil, another figure who rose from a poor peasant family in a foreign land to rule the Byzantine Empire. Basil’s journey to the throne was defined by a mix of competence, scheming, and murder, eventually leading to 19 years of relatively peaceful rule. Whether through the legendary charisma of Liu Bang or the calculated maneuvers of Basil, these figures prove that even the most peripheral commoners can reshape the global landscape.
