The aviator who traded a clergyman's life for a stunt pilot's fame

The Remarkable Life of the Colorful Female Aviator Pancho Barnes · 8:09 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Born into California wealth, Florence Lowe was destined for the skies by her grandfather, who helped establish the first U.S. military air unit. But she didn't just fly; she broke world records, pioneered Hollywood stunts, and reinvented herself as Pancho—a name forged in a four-month odyssey through Mexico.

Born in 1901 to a wealthy family whose fortune was built on aviation, Florence Leontine Lowe grew up with an inherited zeal for flight. Her grandfather, Thaddeus S.C. Lowe, was the man responsible for establishing the Union Army Balloon Corps during the American Civil War. This lineage provided her with both the resources and the early inspiration—including a trip to an air show at age ten—to pursue a career in the cockpit. Her life took a radical turn in 1928. After marrying an Episcopal priest, she found herself ill-suited for domestic life and abandoned her husband and son for four months. Traveling to Mexico aboard a freighter while dressed in men's clothing, she roamed the countryside and acquired the nickname 'Pancho.' Upon returning to California, she purchased a Travelair biplane and mastered solo flight after just six hours of instruction.

Barnes quickly became a pioneer of speed and spectacle. During the production of Hell’s Angels, Howard Hughes hired her to execute aerial feats in 1929, making her a pioneer as the initial female stunt pilot for cinema. She subsequently founded a company to provide stunt pilots to various studios. By 1930, she was the first woman to fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City. In 1930, she also set a new world speed record for women with an average of 196.19 miles per hour, surpassing Amelia Earhart’s previous record.

Her legacy is defined by a transition from inherited privilege to self-made notoriety. While many knew her as a Hollywood celebrity, Barnes was a serious technician who put immense effort into becoming an expert pilot despite her reputation for mischievous aerial antics. She didn't just participate in the aviation boom; she built a business within it, organizing cross-country races and establishing a professional infrastructure for female aviators.
