How a family survived 40 years in total isolation from the modern world
In short: In 1978, Soviet geologists discovered a family of five living deep within the Siberian taiga. Having fled religious persecution in 1936, they had spent over four decades completely cut off from human contact, remaining entirely unaware of global events like World War II or the moon landing.
The discovery occurred in the summer of 1978, when a helicopter searching for a landing site near an unnamed tributary of the Abakan River encountered the group. The family was living in a remote, densely wooded valley, located more than 150 miles from the nearest human settlement. Among the five members was Agafia Lykov, who was born while the family was already living in isolation and remains the only surviving member of the group.
The environment they inhabited, the Siberian taiga, is one of the largest nearly uninhabited wildernesses on Earth. Stretching from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific and from Russia's Arctic regions to the Mongolian border, it covers millions of square miles. This vast expanse is characterized by its extreme difficulty; the terrain features steep-sided mountains, icy bogs, and white-water rivers that pour through valleys. The climate is punishing, with an average mean yearly temperature of negative five degrees Celsius.
Survival in such a landscape is dictated by the seasons. While the taiga blooms for a few short months during the summer, the harsh climate generally discourages habitation. Snow often lingers into May, and freezing temperatures return as early as September. The forest is a dangerous ecosystem where bears and red foxes wander by day, while wolves hunt under the cover of night. For the Lykov family, this desolation provided both a refuge from persecution and a profound, decades-long disconnection from the rest of humanity.
