The Sun is actually white, not the yellow color we see from Earth

The Sun is White, Not Yellow... and 8 other Astronomy Facts · 3:49 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: While we often depict the Sun as a yellow orb, its true color in the human visual spectrum is white. Beyond this visual deception, our solar system is a place of staggering scales, from massive water reservoirs in space to the immense energy required to halt Earth's orbit.

The Sun is classified as a yellow dwarf star, but this is a matter of classification rather than visual appearance. If viewed from outside Earth's atmosphere, the Sun appears white. It is a dynamic star composed of hydrogen and helium, with a core temperature reaching 27 million °F (15 million °C). Although the photosphere remains fairly cool at 10,000 °F (5,500 °C), the corona—the Sun's outer atmosphere—can soar to 3.5 million °F (2 million °C).

The scale of cosmic movement and energy is difficult to grasp. Earth orbits the Sun at 66,600 mph while rotating at 1,070 mph. The entire solar system travels around the Milky Way at approximately 559,234 mph, a journey that takes about 225 million Earth years. Since its formation roughly 4.6 billion years ago, our solar system has completed this galactic circuit approximately 20.4 times.

The Sun's evolution will eventually dictate Earth's fate. In about 1 to 2 billion years, the Sun's increasing brightness is expected to vaporize Earth's surface water. In 5 to 6 billion years, the Sun will reach the peak of its red giant phase. While it will lose mass during this period, models suggest it may just barely consume the Earth.

Space also holds immense reservoirs of ancient matter. In 2011, astronomers found a 12 billion-year-old water reservoir in space with a volume estimated at 140 trillion Earth oceans. Since the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old, this finding reinforces the idea that water has existed throughout most of cosmic history.
