From towering giants to eating raw onions: the strange limits of human biology

The Tallest Man Ever... and 9 other Amazing Records · 3:03 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: History is punctuated by extraordinary physical feats and bizarre statistics. Whether it is a man reaching nearly nine feet in height or a competitor breaking dozens of toilet seats with their head, these records reveal the strange, often uncomfortable extremes of what the human body can endure.

The most extreme physical scale is found in the life of Robert Pershing Wadlow, the tallest man in history. Reaching a height of 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 m) and weighing 485 pounds at his death, Wadlow's growth was relentless. By age 4, he was already 5 feet 4 inches (1.63 m) tall, and by 13, he stood 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 m) as the tallest Boy Scout ever recorded. Tragically, his growth had not ceased when he died in 1940; an infection from unnoticed ankle blisters, caused by a lack of sensation in his lower legs, led to his death at age 22.

Beyond height, human records delve into the surreal and the stomach-churning. In 2003, Dennis Gross consumed 102 Peeps in just thirty minutes, a feat governed by strict rules in 'Peep-off' competitions where participants must consume any vomit to avoid disqualification. Other feats of endurance include Kevin Shelley breaking 46 wooden toilet seats with his head in 60 seconds in 2007, and Thomas Blackthorn lifting 27 pounds and 8.96 oz (12.5 kg) using only a metal hook through his tongue in 2008.

Even the mundane can become competitive. In the realm of eating, Joey Chestnut once consumed 8.8 pounds of fried asparagus in 10 minutes to win $1,500, while Russ Wagner won $100 by eating 10 raw onions at the Vidalia Onion Festival. These physical extremes exist alongside statistical anomalies, such as Washington D.C. having roughly 277 lawyers per 10,000 residents—nearly 14 times the rate of any other U.S. state—compared to just about 4 lawyers per 10,000 people in North Dakota.
