Your brain is not just a static organ but a complex, vibrating wave machine.
In short: Alain Goriely explores the hidden physical and electrical rhythms governing brain function. This lecture examines how synchronised neural oscillations and various wave types shape our cognitive processes and responses to trauma.
While the brain appears still, it is a hub of constant wave activity. Cognitive function relies on communication between neurons, which manifests as synchronised oscillations across various frequencies. Beyond these electrical signals, the brain experiences slow chemical waves linked to migraines and mechanical waves triggered by physical trauma.
Alain Goriely, the Gresham Professor of Geometry, delivered this lecture on 18 March 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall in London. Goriely leads the applied mathematics centre at Oxford and was named a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2022.
