A massive new camera is about to change how we view the night sky.
In short: NOVA takes you inside the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile to witness the activation of a groundbreaking astronomical instrument. This facility aims to transform our understanding of the cosmos by capturing unprecedented detail of the universe through a record-breaking digital imaging system.
Located in Chile, the Vera Rubin Observatory features a primary mirror spanning 8.4 meters. Its centerpiece is a digital camera capable of capturing 3.2 billion pixels, marking it as the most powerful device of its kind ever constructed for space observation.
The observatory's potential was demonstrated during an initial 10-hour test run, which successfully identified more than 2,100 previously unknown asteroids. By providing such high-resolution data, the project is expected to significantly alter the landscape of modern astronomy.
