Can peers provide better mental health support than traditional systems?

Tom Osborn: A new way to help young people with their mental health · 7:00 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: In regions where professional psychiatric care is nearly non-existent, a new model relies on the power of community. Watch how Tom Osborn is training young people to become the primary mental health lifeline for their own peers.

The Shamiri Institute addresses a critical shortage in Kenya, which currently has only two psychiatrists for every million people. To bypass limited professional supplies, this project equips individuals aged 18- to 22-years old with skills for providing peer-led mental health treatment grounded in research.

This youth-oriented, community-first model aims to create a scalable template for global mental health. By empowering young people to support one another, the project seeks to help them lead more independent and successful lives while bypassing traditional systemic barriers.
