How a tenth-century logician used rigorous deduction to prove the existence of God
In short: Udayana was a towering Indian philosopher who transformed theology into a precise logical discipline. By synthesizing the Nyaya and Vaisheshika schools, he created a framework of rigorous analysis that challenged materialists and Buddhists alike. His work remains a landmark in the history of Indian thought, defining the nature of reality.
Active between the late 10th and early 11th centuries in Mithila, Bihar, Udayana is celebrated as the most significant figure of the Nyaya tradition. He operated during a pivotal transition, serving as an unmatched master of the older Nyaya school while acting as a herald for the Navya-Nyaya, or New Nyaya, movement that would follow in the 13th century. Scholars like Madhavacharya later described him as a master who had successfully navigated the entire expanse of logical principles.
Udayana’s primary intellectual project was the integration of Vaisheshika ontology—which categorizes the world into entities like substance, quality, action, and non-existence—with the Nyaya system of epistemology. He argued that philosophy should be grounded in logical reasoning rather than spiritual practice. To this end, he focused on creating precise definitions for every category, believing that clear conceptual boundaries were essential for maintaining consistency in any serious philosophical discourse.
His most famous work, the Nyayakusumanjali, presents nine distinct arguments for the existence of a creative God. These range from the causal necessity of an intelligent designer for the world to the inference of a divine author for the infallible Vedas. By asserting that the world is an effect requiring an efficient cause, and that unintelligent forces like nature's unseen principles require an intelligent guide, Udayana sought to provide a rational, evidence-based foundation for theism that could withstand the scrutiny of his contemporaries.
Udayana’s influence was profound, with later thinkers like Gangesha Upadhyaya referring to him simply as the Master. His works, including the Atmatattvaviveka and the Lakshanavali, were meticulously preserved, ensuring his methodology remained central to Indian philosophy for centuries. By treating the existence of God as a problem to be solved through deductive reasoning, he fundamentally shifted how metaphysical questions were approached in the Indian tradition.
