How New York City middle schoolers are transforming into real-world scientific investigators
In short: The Urban Advantage Science Initiative connects thousands of students with major cultural institutions to conduct hands-on research. This video highlights the program's decade-long impact on classroom learning and student engagement across all five boroughs.
Over the last 10 years, the Urban Advantage program has bridged the gap between traditional classrooms and professional science environments. By partnering with eight major institutions—including the American Museum of Natural History, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Aquarium—the initiative provides students with the resources to perform authentic scientific investigations.
This year alone, the program supported more than 50,000 middle school students from 177 public schools. Funded by the New York City Council and the Department of Education, the initiative aims to deepen scientific inquiry for students, teachers, and families alike.
