In short: As India's first High Commissioner to the UK and later Defence Minister, V. K. Krishna Menon was a polarizing titan of 20th-century diplomacy. From founding the India League to delivering the longest speech in UN history, he shaped India's foreign policy and military-industrial complex while navigating intense international scrutiny.

Born in 1896 into an aristocratic Kerala family, V. K. Krishna Menon emerged as a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement. After moving to London in 1924, he founded the India League in 1928, effectively turning British public sentiment toward the cause of Indian sovereignty. A polymath who earned first-class honours in political science and industrial psychology, Menon became a close confidant of Jawaharlal Nehru. His influence was instrumental in the mechanics of independence, including the selection of Lord Mountbatten as the final Viceroy.

Menon’s tenure as India’s representative to the United Nations from 1949 to 1962 cemented his reputation as a formidable, if controversial, diplomat. He championed the Non-Aligned Movement, seeking a third path between the United States and the Soviet Union. His diplomatic interventions spanned the Suez Crisis, the Korean War, and the Congo Crisis. In 1957, he delivered an eight-hour speech defending India's position on Kashmir—the longest in UN history—which led to his collapse on the Security Council floor and earned him the title 'Hero of Kashmir' at home.

As Defence Minister starting in 1957, Menon transformed India's military infrastructure, establishing the Defence Research and Development Organization and the Sainik Schools. However, his tenure was marked by significant friction, including the resignation of General K.S. Thimayya and intense criticism following the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Despite being held responsible for military unpreparedness and resigning in 1962, Menon remained a powerful political force and a dedicated advocate for human rights in his later legal career, practicing as a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court until his death in 1974.
