Can particle physics explain the universe without invoking the supernatural or mystical?
In short: Victor J. Stenger, a particle physicist turned philosopher, spent his career arguing that science and religion are fundamentally incompatible. From debunking psychic claims to challenging the fine-tuning of the universe, Stenger maintained that consciousness and free will are natural phenomena that require no mystical explanation to be fully understood.
Born in 1935 in Bayonne, New Jersey, Victor J. Stenger built a distinguished career as a research scientist before becoming a prominent voice in the New Atheism movement. After earning his PhD from UCLA, he spent decades at the University of Hawaii, focusing his research on neutrino astronomy and the properties of subatomic particles like quarks and gluons. His scientific background provided the foundation for his later work as a philosopher, where he sought to remove religious influence from the scientific and political spheres.
Stenger was a vocal critic of contemporary pseudoscience and the misuse of quantum mechanics to support supernatural claims. He authored twelve books for general audiences, including the 2007 bestseller 'God: The Failed Hypothesis', which argued that science provides no evidence for the existence of a deity. He frequently challenged the 'anthropic principle'—the idea that the universe is fine-tuned for human life—arguing instead that the cosmos can be explained through natural laws without intentional design.
His career was marked by both intellectual debate and public controversy. In 1992, he successfully defended himself against a $4 million defamation lawsuit brought by Uri Geller, who objected to Stenger’s questioning of his alleged psychic powers. While some scholars, such as astronomer Luke Barnes, have contested his arguments regarding fine-tuning, Stenger remained steadfast in his commitment to philosophical naturalism. He believed that even the most complex human experiences, such as consciousness, would eventually be explained through scientific inquiry, leaving no room for the supernatural.
