Can a morality of visions and values navigate a world of shifting political authority?

Vision and Values in a Volatile World - Professors Michael Mainelli and Ken Costa · 59:06 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: In 2011, the global landscape was defined by sudden regime changes and a cascading debt crisis. As liquidity issues morphed into threats to national sovereignty, Professor Kenneth Costa proposed a specific ethical framework for business to survive such profound volatility.

The year 2011 was marked by intense global instability. The Arab Spring brought regime changes and protests across Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, while civil war and unrest spread to Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Morocco, and Palestine. Simultaneously, the Eurozone faced a severe debt crisis, characterized by bailouts in Ireland, Portugal, and Greece, alongside unpopular austerity measures in several European nations. This period saw the crisis evolve from a simple lack of bank liquidity into a fundamental challenge to national solvency.

The economic tension was not limited to Europe. In the United States, the credit rating of the nation was downgraded by Standard and Poor in August 2011, a move that gained weight after employment figures showed zero jobs created that month. Political deadlock between Democrats and Republicans over budget deals even raised the possibility of a default on the $14 trillion US debt, prompting Chinese state-run media to label US politicians "dangerously irresponsible."

While China appeared more resilient to debt contagion and showed signs of growing domestic demand, it remained vulnerable to falling Western consumer demand and the complexities of global debt. Ultimately, the era demonstrated a mutation in the nature of crises: what began as a struggle over financial indebtedness transformed into a profound crisis of political authority. Professor Costa suggests that an ethics of business rooted in a morality of visions and values is best suited to navigate these volatile shifts.
