Could your birth season be shaping your temperament and mood?

What Does Your Birthday Say About You? The Seasonal Birth Effect · 3:46 · Video: The Royal Institution · Watch at the source

In short: While astrology is often dismissed as bunk, scientific research suggests your time of birth might actually influence your brain chemistry. From mood swings to excessive positivity, the season you were born may play a role in developing certain affective temperaments and increasing your risk for mood disorders.

The seasonal birth effect posits that environmental differences during pregnancy—such as increased sunlight exposure during summer—can cause physiological changes that impact early development. For instance, higher sunlight exposure might increase oxidative stress, potentially tweaking the internal conditions for a developing baby. This could lead to long-term effects on monoamine neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which remain detectable even in adulthood. Such variations in the womb may influence how certain traits manifest later in life. This theory suggests that the time of year a person gestates can fundamentally affect their brain chemistry.

Xenia Gonda, a Semmelweis University associate professor in Budapest, investigated these connections during her presentation at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. By surveying over 400 subjects, the study identified statistically significant trends between birth season and temperament. The findings suggested that those born in summer were more prone to cyclothymic temperament, characterized by rapid swings between sad and cheerful moods, whereas those born in winter were significantly less prone to irritable temperaments.

The study also noted that a hyperthymic temperament—a tendency toward excessive positivity—was higher in individuals born during spring and summer. Conversely, those born in autumn showed a lower tendency toward depressive temperaments compared to those born in winter. While these correlations are compelling, researchers caution that finding a link in specific data sets does not prove a universal causal relationship. We cannot yet definitively identify the exact mechanisms involved, though scientists are now investigating potential genetic markers related to these seasonal associations.
