Beyond the money: the hidden social responsibilities of the City
In short: When we think of the City of London, we often imagine finance and commerce. But the Lord Mayor’s 2012 lecture suggests its true strength lies in a much deeper, more invisible commitment to community stability and social responsibility.
In his 201le Lord Mayor's Annual Gresham Lecture, Alderman David Wootton addressed the fundamental question of an authority's legitimacy: what has it actually done for its people? Speaking from the Guildhall—a structure that has represented the City’s dedication to charity, commerce, and community for 600 years—Wootton argued that any authority must be judged by its outcomes to remain sustainable. This lecture was delivered on 22 June 2012. The tradition of Gresham College providing free public lectures to the community dates back to 1597.
While the lecture playfully references the famous Monty Python skit regarding Roman contributions like roads and sanitation, Wootton’s focus was on the modern necessity of 'sustainability'. He posited that the City cannot thrive by serving only a small elite or by ignoring the needs of the wider community. Instead, he argued that true business sense requires evolving to support those most in need. The speaker noted that the City has survived for centuries not by ignoring problems, but by refusing to simply stick its head in the sand.
Drawing a parallel to the bicentennial of Charles Dickens, Wootton highlighted the responsibility of the 'haves' toward the 'have-nots'. He described his role as a 'front man' for a much larger, less visible effort: what he termed 'good by stealth.' This refers to the immense amount of hard work and goodwill occurring in less prominent ways to maintain the vital connections between industry, the nation, and the community. Wootton, who also serves as the Chairman of the Charles Dickens Museum in Bloomsbury, emphasized that the City maintains essential links to both industry and the nation.
