Could an AI clone expand the boundaries of human musical expression?
In short: Imagine stepping onto a stage and instantly adopting the unmistakable timbre of a world-class vocalist. Experimental composer Holly Herndon has turned this concept into reality, using custom AI models to allow anyone to perform using her unique melodic gifts.
For years, Holly Herndon has explored the intersection of melody and machine learning. Her journey into electronic music began with traditional roots, singing in choirs and churches in East Tennessee. Nevertheless, her scholarly journey resulted in advanced technical expertise, including a master's from Mills College and a PhD from the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University. This rigorous background provided the foundation for her experiments with artificial intelligence.
Her exploration of machine learning began around 2015. While early outputs were often described as scratchy and unpolished, Herndon recognized a potential "diamond in the rough" within the data. These early attempts have since matured into sophisticated, custom models. One such innovation is Holly+, an AI-powered instrument that enables others to sing with her specific voice. During live demonstrations, such as those featuring the musician Pher, the technology can transform a natural voice into a perfect digital replica of Herndon's own singing style.
Despite the common fear that such technology might render human performers obsolete, Herndon maintains a different perspective. She argues that AI is not intended to replace artists, but rather to act as a tool for collective intelligence. In her view, the future of creativity lies in shared expression, and AI simply makes the inherently collaborative nature of human creativity more visible. By creating a voice clone that is accessible to the public, she is shifting the focus from individual ownership to a new era of communal musical creation.
