Living at 17,500 miles per hour: The reality of orbital life

What it's like to live on the International Space Station | Cady Coleman · 6:17 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Imagine living in a laboratory hurtling around the planet at 17,500 miles per hour. For astronaut Cady Coleman, this meant spending 159 days in a high-speed environment where gravity disappears, and the only true limitation is the number of minutes available in a day to complete the mission.

During her 5 1/2-month stay on the International Space Station, Cady Coleman experienced the unique physical and psychological demands of microgravity. While she describes the transition back to Earth as both quick and slow, she noted a lingering sense of dizziness and a feeling that the world was turning too quickly, highlighting how profound the shift from a weightless environment to a terrestrial one can be. The station serves as a hub for expanding the frontiers of science, where Coleman and a multi-national crew performed experiments and managed complex logistics. One of the most significant operational feats was the capture of the Japanese HTV supply ship. Coleman noted that while these maneuvers are practiced on Earth using computer simulations, the reality of having a many-tons vessel just 15 feet away from the station provides a visceral experience that cannot be replicated on the ground. Beyond the technical work, the experience is defined by a unique perspective. With the addition of the cupola, astronauts can observe the Earth's surface approaching and receding within just one or two minutes. Coleman describes this vista as significant to the human soul. Despite the station being nearly complete after more than 10 years of construction, she emphasizes that the current primary limitation is time; if more people could be stationed there simultaneously, the pace of scientific advancement could increase further.
