The millionaire inventor of Monopoly may have been a historical fraud

In short: Charles Darrow became an overnight sensation during the Great Depression, selling thousands of homemade board games to become America's first millionaire game creator. But history suggests his success was built on a foundation of stolen intellectual property from a feminist activist who predated him by decades.

The popular narrative identifies Charles Darrow as the 'freak' of nature who invented Monopoly in 1933. After being initially rejected by Parker Brothers in 1934, Darrow sold 5,000 homemade copies before the company finally bought his rights. He was subsequently marketed as the sole inventor, a move that secured him immense wealth and cemented his name in gaming lore.

However, the game's true origins lie with Elizabeth Phillips (also known as Elizabeth Magie). In January 1904, Elizabeth Magie, an activist on the left who championed feminism at the turn of the century, secured a patent for 'The Landlord's Game'. Her goal was educational: she wanted to illustrate economic concepts and the dangers of land monopolies to citizens, specifically advocating for Henry George's single tax movement.

The transition from Magie's concept to Darrow's commercial success is a matter of corporate acquisition. Parker Brothers eventually purchased the rights to 'The Landlord's Game' from Phillips for $500. This agreement allowed them to manufacture and develop the game further, leading to the version we recognize today as Monopoly. While Darrow introduced iconic elements like the red 'Go' arrow and specific landmarks, he was essentially refining a pre-existing intellectual property.

This history highlights a common pattern in industrial history: the difference between an original concept and its commercial refinement. By buying up all related patents and copyrights, Parker Brothers ensured they held a literal monopoly on the game, effectively erasing Magie's contribution from the public consciousness while elevating Darrow to mythic status.
