Is your dog misbehaving, or just speaking a language you don't understand?

Alexandra Horowitz: Why all dogs are good dogs · 30:33 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We often label canine behaviors as 'bad,' but what if these actions are actually attempts to communicate? Canine cognition expert Alexandra Horowitz suggests that many common misbehaviors are simply the result of a dog trying to navigate a world that is fundamentally different from our own.

To understand a dog, we must first understand their sensory reality. Alexandra Horowitz, a specialist in dog cognition who has taught at Barnard College since 2004, focuses her research on how dogs experience the world, particularly through their sense of smell. Her work explores the olfactory experience of domestic dogs in natural settings, aiming to bridge the gap between human perception and canine reality. Her studies investigate how dogs perceive affordances when negotiating openings, such as whether they can limbo. She also examines how dogs discriminate between the scents of different owners.

This gap often leads to friction in human-canine relationships. When a dog engages in what humans perceive as 'misbehavior,' it may actually be a functional response to their environment. For instance, research has looked into how dogs use landmarks to learn vertical navigation, such as distinguishing between doors and floors while moving on all fours. Understanding these cognitive processes is essential to moving past human-centric judgments.

By shifting our perspective from seeing 'bad dogs' to understanding 'different minds,' we can foster better welfare. Horowitz's research spans from the complex olfactory pathways revealed by tractography to the social dynamics of play, including distinctive 'play pants' produced by dogs. Ultimately, the goal is to recognize the individual animal and provide a healthier, happier life by respecting their unique way of being in the world. Her investigations also explore whether providing toys on a short-term basis actually improves the welfare of companion animals. Furthermore, she examines how children's emotional competence relates to their bonds with pets.
