The chaotic origin of Black Friday has nothing to do with profits
In short: We are taught that Black Friday marks the moment retailers move from the red into the black. In reality, the name was born from police frustration and urban gridlock, not accounting ledgers. The transition to a retail success story was a marketing masterpiece that took decades to perfect.
The popular narrative that Black Friday signifies the day stores turn a profit is a modern myth. While merchants began promoting the "red-to-black" profit narrative in the late 1980s to frame the day as a retail triumph, the term actually originated in the early 1960s. During this era, Philadelphia police officers used "Black Friday" to describe the logistical nightmare caused by massive influxes of suburban tourists arriving for holiday shopping and the annual Army-Navy football game.
This surge of shoppers created significant headaches for law enforcement, who were forced to work extended shifts to manage traffic jams, accidents, and shoplifting. The name was so associated with chaos that local merchants tried to rebrand the day as "Big Friday" to present a more positive image. It wasn't until nearly thirty years later that the phrase was successfully rebranded nationwide as a celebration of massive sales and the start of the holiday shopping season.
Interestingly, the day was not historically the busiest for most stores; many saw their largest sales on the Saturday before Christmas. The term also carries a separate, unrelated historical weight: in 1869, the "Black Friday" of September 24 refers to a failed attempt by financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk to corner the gold market. This event led to a stock market crash and widespread bankruptcy, a financial catastrophe entirely distinct from modern holiday shopping.
