Your brain is too smart to let you tickle yourself

Why Can't You Tickle Yourself? · 3:09 · Video: BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks · Watch at the source

In short: You can feel a feather brush your skin, but you cannot replicate a deep, laughter-inducing tickle on your own ribs. This isn't a failure of touch, but a triumph of prediction. Your brain is actively monitoring your movements to filter out the sensations you cause yourself.

Tickling involves two distinct sensations. The first, known as knismesis, is the light, itchy feeling of a feather against the skin. The second, gargalesis, is the intense, rhythmic pressure that induces laughter and involuntary movement. While you might trigger knismesis, the more intense gargalesis is nearly impossible to self-induce because of how your brain processes sensory input.

The mechanism lies in the cerebellum. When you move your own hands toward your neck or stomach, the cerebellum sends an alert to the rest of the brain, predicting the coming sensation. This allows the somatosensory cortex, which handles touch, and the anterior cingulated cortex, which processes pleasure, to essentially mute the incoming signal. Because your brain knows your own hands do not pose a legitimate threat, it filters the touch out as unnecessary information.

This predictive ability has evolutionary roots. Biologists suggest that the laughter associated with gargalesis may be an innate submissive response to a potential attacker. By simulating attacks on vulnerable areas—like the neck, which houses the trachea and arteries, or the underarms and abdomen, which lack bony protection—humans may have developed tickling as a way to teach children how to defend themselves.

The only notable exception to this self-awareness is found in individuals with schizophrenia. Due to biochemical or structural variations, their cerebellum may fail to alert the brain to their own movements. Consequently, they may perceive their own touch as coming from an external or even 'alien' source, making self-tickling a possibility.
