Why your brain mistakes sunlight for a nasal irritation

Why Does the Sun Make You Sneeze? · 7:18 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Stepping from a dark room into the sun can trigger an immediate, uncontrollable sneeze. This isn't an allergy or a cold; it is a neurological glitch. Known as the photic sneeze reflex, this strange biological quirk affects a significant portion of the human population.

The condition, formally known as Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst (ACHOO) syndrome, is a reflex where the brain misinterprets a visual stimulus. While most sneezes are triggered by physical irritation in the nasal cavity—such as pollen, pepper, or congestion—a solar sneeze originates entirely in the brain's neural pathways.

The mechanism involves a phenomenon of 'cross-talk' between nerve circuits. When the eyes are suddenly exposed to bright light, the signals travel along pathways that are positioned very close to the nerves governing the nose. In people with ACHOO syndrome, the brain essentially gets confused by these overlapping circuits, convincing the body that a sneeze is necessary even though no physical irritant is present.

This reflex is a dominant genetic trait, meaning there is a 50% chance of inheriting it if one biological parent has the condition. It is surprisingly common, with estimates suggesting that between 18% and 35% of the population experiences it. While the exact prevalence is debated due to a lack of robust studies, historical interest in the phenomenon dates back as far as the 4th century B.C., when the Greek philosopher Aristotle first questioned why humans are more apt to sneeze after looking at the sun.

The reaction is typically immediate and short-lived, often occurring most prominently when moving from dark to light environments, such as exiting a tunnel or turning on bright indoor lights. While a deviated septum may be a contributing factor for some, the reflex itself is not considered dangerous.
