Can a simple cup of coffee actually disarm a person full of hate?

Özlem Cekic: Why I have coffee with people who send me hate mail · 15:23 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: After becoming the first female Muslim elected to the Danish Parliament in 2007, Özlem Cekic began receiving a flood of hate mail. Instead of ignoring the vitriol, she started inviting her critics to meet for coffee. She explains how these face-to-face dialogues can bridge deep ideological divides.

Özlem Cekic initially dismissed the hostile emails she received as the work of fanatics. However, following a friend's suggestion, she began a practice of reaching out to the authors of these messages to invite them for what she calls 'dialogue coffee.'

Having conducted hundreds of these meetings, Cekic argues that direct, personal conversation is a potent tool for dismantling prejudice. Her experience challenges the instinct to avoid those with opposing views, suggesting that human connection can disrupt the cycle of hate.
